29 June 1979. 19 h 30. Aboard his foiler-assisted trimaran Paul Ricard, Eric Tabarly and Marc Pajot at the helm have been leading the two-handed race all along the two crossing of the Atlantic until this afternoon. A race starting from Lorient, rounding a mark in Bermuda and returning to Lorient. Suddenly, the trimaran VSD arriving on their heel, will overtake Paul Ricard upwind, in spite of an ultimate luffing match. The day before, Tabarly had pushed too much the light spinnaker which burst. This mistake costed Paul Ricard the race. In spite of a long and painful repair by Marc Pajot, the yacht was obliged to use her slower heavy spinnaker for the last twenty four hours of the race. When they hoisted it again, one hour before the finish, it was too late. Eugene Riguidel and Gilles Gahinet, the VSD co-skippers, flying a rainbow-coloured spinnaker, crossed the line 5 minutes and 42 seconds ahead ! They had left Lorient on May 26.
